And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ. (Ephesians 4:11-12) The five-fold ministry is given so the saints can be equipped to do their ministry. To build up the body, not just numerically but spiritually, because He loves us. Just like the Army recruit is fully equipped to be a soldier. So the saint is not expected to supply their own equipment. He does it all through these gifts because He loves us.
